STUDJURBAN’s design proposal for Mosta’s Square sets out to improve the well-being of the locality’s residents and local businesses. It centres on creating a better designed square within prospective infrastructural upgrades initiated by Mosta Local Council and Infrastructure Malta.

This project falls within a wider strategy, which commenced with the development of a Slow Streets network within the locality of Mosta and that seeks to improve pedestrian amenities in the area, improve the legibility of public areas and create new attractive urban spaces. This includes the reorganisation of some traffic routes as part of a wider traffic management revision in order to limit the amount of through traffic passing within this central urban space and provide more priority to pedestrians and cyclists alike.

New paved and landscaped spaces create safer pedestrian zones and slow down vehicular speeds, with a design that facilitates the square’s closure if and when required. In this way it seeks to deter unnecessary through traffic from using the square as a shortcut and contribute to reduced vehicular activity throughout the year.

Mosta’s residents were consulted and feedback was collected throughout the design process. This resulted in an increase of the paved extents of the square, towards both Triq il-Kbira and Triq il-Bażilika, as well as changes to the materiality and detailed design elements.
