Urban Planning in Malta – MHS Lecture Series 2013-14
Dr Antoine Zammit was invited to deliver a lecture entitled ‘Urban Planning in Malta – It’s Historical Development and Influence Today’. This lecture discussed the salient, successful and unsuccessful, initiatives geared towards formal (and informal) urban planning in Malta throughout the centuries. It then focuses on post-Independent Malta and the attempts to set up a formal planning system. This is a story of struggles, successes, failures and frustrations, told in the light of the unfolding context that characterised Malta throughout the 20th Century. The lecture illustrates how a number of key decisions taken in the past have influenced our urban environment, highlighting a number of critical challenges currently being faced by our planning system.
